Primers: Myth or Must Have?

Primers promise the world: a smooth base and long-lasting makeup. This would be absolutely perfect if it were true. In order to decide whether primers are worth a little less change in your wallet, I decided to put them to the test. In this post I studied {mostly} drug store primers and did the research so you don’t have to!

Myth or Must Have-

I tested the Elf Hydrating Primer, Maybelline’s Magic Lumi Primer,  Benefit’s Stay Flawless Primer, and of course I tested without any primer at all. I used the same foundation and skin care routine every day to eliminate any variables.

I put each of the primers on in the morning and tested them after 6 hot, humid and rainy days around campus in Florida. Not optimal makeup weather so it really put these primers to the test!

**Side Note**

My makeup ALWAYS creases on my nose because I wear glasses.

So let’s check out the results…..

 No primer

I usually use primer, so I was pleasantly surprised how well the foundation lasted without it. However, applying the makeup wasn’t as smooth and easy as it is with primer, so I will give it that advantage.

This was my first time testing this product. I was especially excited that it was moisturizing because my skin tends to be dry. I was scared that because I was putting so much moisture on my face it would slip off, but as you can see it actually held together fairly well!  Applying my foundation on top of it was like a dream!

This product doesn’t make a huge difference as far as application, but I would say it helped my makeup stay put. My cheeks did get splotchy even with the primer on.

Not going to lie I was quite disappointed. The application was SO smooth and it really gave it a nice, sheer base to apply foundation on. BUT what is going on with my nose? Don’t blame the primer, I didn’t put primer on there! The rest of my face isn’t much better though…

Drum roll please…

With a bit of reluctance I declare primers a must have!

I think that if you find the one that works for you its a great advantage for foundation application. It helps your makeup go on much smoother.

Unless you get one that does what it promises…..the lasting power is a sham. I don’t think they actually make a difference in lasting any longer than it normally would.

Do you agree? I would love to hear if you’ve found any primers that do what they say they’re going to do!

Remember, you’re only as stunning as your inner beauty. But a little lipstick never hurt 😉
