Primers: Myth or Must Have?

Primers promise the world: a smooth base and long-lasting makeup. This would be absolutely perfect if it were true. In order to decide whether primers are worth a little less change in your wallet, I decided to put them to the test. In this post I studied {mostly} drug store primers and did the research so you don’t have to!

Myth or Must Have-

I tested the Elf Hydrating Primer, Maybelline’s Magic Lumi Primer,  Benefit’s Stay Flawless Primer, and of course I tested without any primer at all. I used the same foundation and skin care routine every day to eliminate any variables.

I put each of the primers on in the morning and tested them after 6 hot, humid and rainy days around campus in Florida. Not optimal makeup weather so it really put these primers to the test!

**Side Note**

My makeup ALWAYS creases on my nose because I wear glasses.

So let’s check out the results…..

NO PRIMER

 No primer

I usually use primer, so I was pleasantly surprised how well the foundation lasted without it. However, applying the makeup wasn’t as smooth and easy as it is with primer, so I will give it that advantage.

ELF HYDRATING

Lumi

This was my first time testing this product. I was especially excited that it was moisturizing because my skin tends to be dry. I was scared that because I was putting so much moisture on my face it would slip off, but as you can see it actually held together fairly well!  Applying my foundation on top of it was like a dream!

MAYBELLINE MAGIC LUMI

Elf

This product doesn’t make a huge difference as far as application, but I would say it helped my makeup stay put. My cheeks did get splotchy even with the primer on.

BENEFIT STAY FLAWLESS

Benefit

Not going to lie I was quite disappointed. The application was SO smooth and it really gave it a nice, sheer base to apply foundation on. BUT what is going on with my nose? Don’t blame the primer, I didn’t put primer on there! The rest of my face isn’t much better though…

THE FINAL VERDICT

Drum roll please…

With a bit of reluctance I declare primers a must have!

I think that if you find the one that works for you its a great advantage for foundation application. It helps your makeup go on much smoother.

BUT

Unless you get one that does what it promises…..the lasting power is a sham. I don’t think they actually make a difference in lasting any longer than it normally would.

Do you agree? I would love to hear if you’ve found any primers that do what they say they’re going to do!

Remember, you’re only as stunning as your inner beauty. But a little lipstick never hurt 😉

XOXO,

Jacqueline

Pretty Little Liars Series: Emily Fields

It’s my final installment in my Pretty Little Liars series and I’m so excited to share with you my Emily Fields Inspired Look!

Don’t forget to check out my Aria, Hanna and Spencer Inspired looks too!!

 IMG_6649

MAKEUP

Emily’s look is naturally and effortlessly flawless. The trick to her makeup is to make it look like its effortless…even if you put more time into than you’d like people to believe.

-Rustic Mornings

I started with a sheer application of foundation to mimic her natural skin. With Emily, the eye makeup is as simply as it gets. I took a black eyeshadow on an angled brush and drew a thin line. Then I slightly filled in my brows, applied mascara and used concealer to help with problem spots and under eye darkness.

-Rustic Mornings (1)

Emily is naturally bronzed, so I added a bit of PopBeauty bronzer to my contour zones. Then I used MAC Warm Soul for blush to add some subtle, warm color. To finish up I applied a nude lip from Maybelline. That was easy wasn’t it!?

THE HAIR

Emily’s hair changed from time to time, but I thin her classic hairstyle is big waves.

Corrector Colors

I used a medium size barrel to curl large pieces of hair away from my face. After I did that to my whole head, i gently ran my fingers through my hair to soften the girls. Emily’s look is the most straightforward and easy inspired look ever!!

THE OUTFIT

I’ll be the first to say that Emily and I have very different styles. She’s so laid back and simple, while looking stunning at the same time. (I have to put in effort. Not fair)

Back to School: Backpack Essential

Welcome back babes!! It’s time for my final installment in my Back to School series!

This week’s topic: Backpack Essentials

IMG_6546

Also check out my thoughts on Back to School Makeup, Fashion and Sorority Recruitment

Disclaimer: I may have an unnecessary amount of items in my backpack, but I’m okay with that.

First let’s talk about what we’re here for: School. Here are the things that are essential for classes

IMG_6578

Notebook(s)- I bought one for each class at Target

Folder-I keep one in my bag at all times for handouts and then transfer them to a binder specific to that class

Writing utensils-I’ve got pens, pencils, highlighters, you name it

Planner- for keeping my life together

Second on the list are things I carry around related to technology.

IMG_6582

My phone-uh, duh.

My mini iPad-I got tired of trudging my heavy laptop around campus, so i just bought this cutie and its adorable case

Chargers-Call me obsessive, but I have a regular charger and a portable one

Headphones-because what’s a trip to the library without them? (Miserable)

Next up! The essentials.

IMG_6600

Umbrella-Listen. It’s not fun to get rained on. I know.

A beverage-I always have a tumbler or a bottle of water, pepsi or gatorade on me at all times.

Ibuprofen-there’s nothing worse than sitting through an already painful class with a headache or cramps.

Pepper spray-precautionary measure I HIGHLY recommend.

Keys-and not the one to my heart

Wallet-gotta make it rain somehow.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY: The Beauty Bag

IMG_6602

Lipstick-and if you’re me, a few of them

Concealer-when touch ups are needed

Compact mirror-the ultimate tool for success

Also important that I now realize I should add to mine

Gum

Tide to Go

There ya have it! I hope everyone has a wonderful school year! If you think there’s something I missed, please let me know!

First Impression: Benefit’s Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Foundation

It was time for a change in the foundation realm. It took me awhile to figure out which one out of the millions to choose from. This time I choose Benefit’s Hello Flawless Oxygen Wow Foundation. Here’s what I thought the first time I wore it!

Hello Flawless

For my skin tone, I chose “All the Rage Beige” which I thought was fitting for my personality of course.

IMG_0132

The Packaging: I think it’s charming! Simple, girly and just cute. I LOVE how it has the pump and the lever that ensures you waste not a drop of makeup

How It Applies: It blends rather nicely and a little goes a long way. Besides areas where I have heavier redness, I only need one layer for an even applicaiton

How It Looks: Let’s put it this way: You won’t look like a cake face, but you can tell your wearing makeup. Overall I think it’s just right.

IMG_0106

Color: This foundation doesn’t have a wide range of shades. I definitely lucked out because this shade matches the rest of my body perfectly!

How It Holds Up: I’m really impressed with how long and how well this foundation lasts. I went many hours without having to touch up my face. Not even in problem areas like my chin that usually requires attention. I give it an A in the lasting department.

How it Looks In Flash: Take a look at the picture below to see for yourself! I was surprised given the SPF in this foundation that there wasn’t any flashback aka my face wasn’t white as a ghost. Side note: Look how tan I look!!

IMG_0134

I was more impressed than I thought I’d be with this foundation. I would totally recommend this for anyone looking for a new product!

If you’ve found a foundation you love, please give me suggestions for the next time I need a new one! If there’s any product you’d love me to do a First Impression on let me know!

Pretty Little Liars Series: Spencer Hastings Inspired Look

I’d be a liar (pun intended) if I told you I’m a regular PLL viewer. I’m so behind on this series, it’ll be over before I finish the first season. But! I was super inspired by their different styles that I wanted to show you how I would adapt their makeup, hair and fashion styles to embody them myself. Hope you enjoy!   -A (Just kidding it’s Jacqueline…or is it?)

IMG_0408

Don’t forget to check out my Aria Montgomery and Hanna Marin looks too!

Today’s look: Spencer Hastings

THE MAKEUP

Spencer’s makeup has a few classic features: her skin is naturally flawless, her eyes are usually natural and a bit smokey, her face and lips are primarily nude.

Because her skin is so perfect naturally, she usually wears very sheer foundation, which is exactly what I did.

Spen 1

{Primer} {Foundation} {Eyelid Primer}

Her eyes are very natural smoked out a bit on the outer corner. The color appears to be swept upwards from the outer V towards the brow.

spen 2

{Transition color} {Warm Brown}

I finished up the eyes with the highlight on the inner portion of the lid.

Spen 3

{White shadow} {Gel liner}

Next I curled my lashes to get Spencer’s long las line. Then I did the following typical makeup steps: Mascara, concealer, eyebrows and powder.

-Rustic Mornings

THE HAIR

Spencer’s hair is the most diverse of all the Liars. It’s been curled, straight, in between, in ponytails, braids. Everything. So today to switch it up I decided to straighten it and put it in a pony tail.

IMG_0399

THE OUTFIT

I love Spencer’s Style. It’s so professional chic. This is how I matched her style with mine.

Pretty Little Liars Hanna Marin Inspired Look

I’d be a liar (pun intended) if I told you I’m a regular PLL viewer. I’m so behind on this series, it’ll be over before I finish the first season. But! I was super inspired by their different styles that I wanted to show you how I would adapt their makeup, hair and fashion styles to embody them myself. Hope you enjoy!   -A (Just kidding it’s Jacqueline…or is it?)

This week I decided to start off with the beautiful Hanna Marin!

If you want to see my Aria inspired look click here!

IMG_0265\

THE MAKEUP

Hanna’s makeup is always perfect for her stunning blue eyes (that I wish I had). To mimic her eye makeup, I went for a gray smokey eye with hints of blue.

I started with L’Oreal Magic Lumi Primer and Benefit’s Hello Flawless foundation.

collage 1

An optional step at this point is to use a light blue all over the lid, for an extra pop of blue like some of Hanna’s looks.

Collage 2

After finishing these steps, I used Wet n Wild’s blue liner in 695A on the lower lashline and blended that out with the same transition color. Then I applied mascara, filled in my brows, applied concealer and powder.

For the face, I kept it simple with no bronzer and just a light coral.

collage 3

THE HAIR

Hanna’s hair is effortless tousled. I used a medium sized barrel and alternated curling pieces away and towards my face.

THE OUTFIT

There is only one article of clothing that came to mind for Hanna’s look immediately: a blazer.

MAC Blue Brown Pigment Dupe

The other night I was reorganizing my makeup storage (one of my favorite hobbies) and when I reached into the dark depths of makeup that I rarely used and pulled out a Wet n Wild palette. At once, (pause for dramatic effect), I noticed something I hadn’t before. A beautiful, intriguing color. As I glanced at it more, I thought “it looks a lot like..no. Could it be?”

Blue Brown Dupe

Well ladies, it could. Take a look at the “Definer” color on the right.  A dupe for MAC’s blue brown pigment. I don’t own this product myself, but I’ve watched enough tutorials on Youtube and swatched it dreamingly at the store to know that the resemblance is uncanny.

Don’t believe me? See for yourself!

Back to School: Makeup

Title

It’s almost time kids! That’s right: Its almost time to hit the hallways again. With school days quickly approaching I created a series guide to help all those trendy girls out there transition from summer to studying. Don’t forget to take a look at next weeks topic: Back to School Fashion

Today’s subject: Makeup of course!

For a lot of girls, makeup at school is tricky. Some schools are really strict, while others aren’t. Other factors also come into play when it comes to back to school makeup like age and the amount of effort you want to put into this ordeal. Continue reading “Back to School: Makeup”
